The Church of Sofia

The Church of Sofia in Sofia, capital city of Bulgaria

The church according to history was established in the early 1400s. The church of Sofia is one of the oldest churches in Sofia, Bulgaria and its history is likely to be as old that of the city of Sofia. It is among the top places to visit in Sofia Bulgaria as it remains iconic because as one trod with the horses approaching Sofia, this was the first landmark that caught the eye. And the church of Sofia became a great geographical vocal point for the once small city of Sofia. One of the most interesting qualities of the church is that under the church there is a mosque.

Sofia is a city known to its many religions throughout the different times that have lived and flourished and these include but are not limited to: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. The church was initially built as a mosque but as the Ottoman empire took over the church was converted into a mosque. And throughout history these spaces have shared spaces or and took over spaces meant for the other, This explains why there is a museum under the church. This unique history makes the church of Sofia among the top places to visit in Sofia.

History of the church of Sofia

The church has no bell tower, since it was made in the very early dazs before the roman empire took over in Bulgaria. The ancient churches had no bell towers and the church of Sofia was thus no exception. However, the church improvised in the latter years and a large bell was installed right outide the church, on a tree. The tree symbolizes the connection Sofia has to mother nature, the bell hangs loosely and on cold winter months when birds cannot perch, the church has some artefacts of birds hanging on the tree.

I visited the church Sofia in the winter and on the day there was a little of sun, the cold weather not withstanding it was a great day. There are free tours for Sofia, #FreeSofiaTour one can book online and the tours are amazing. Had a great tour guide by the name Martin and he went out of his way to make the event memorable. A random pic of me in Sofia under a tree that carries so much history.

I was once in Sofia though wasn’t able to explore. The Church of Sofia is definitely on my list of places to see on my next visit. Thank you so much Kerrygan Travels for this travel-guide and especially the meaning behind the bell in the tree in front of the Church of Sofia.
