The Iron Bridge Frankfurt

The Iron bridge in Frankfurt is one of the oldest bridges in the city. The Iron bridge is commonly known as the ‘Eiserner Steg’ – the iron footbridge. The view from the bridge gives you a magnificent view of Frankfurt’s Skyscrapers and an overlook at the Sachsenhausen quarter. The iron bridge was built in 18neo-Gothic-style bridge was built in 1869.

 In addition, one gets to overlook the river Main after which Frankfurt is named. The city of Frankfurt is officially knowns as Frankfurt am Main which loosely translates to Frankfurt on the Main.

On a great summer day, a walk on the bridge lets you enjoy a view of the city and later when ne walks down the bridge you can take a walk along the banks of the river Main. The bridge is also famous for its padlocks on which couples write their names and lock the padlock on the bridge. It is very common for people to do this on bridges across Europe and the Iron Bridge is no exception.

The padlocks on the iron bridge are left by couples and there is a belief that once the padlocks are locked, the relationship is also locked.

The bridge carries a lot of history with it and was built in 18neo-Gothic-style bridge was built in 1869 according to the plans of Peter Schmick. The bridge has gone through renovations, modifications and changes through the years and the last great modification was done in 1993.

The bridge serves the original purpose to connect the city of Frankfurt and Sachsenhausen. Sachsenhausen is a lively quarter that holds the samall bars and restaurants of Frankurt. One could argue Sachsenhausen is the heart of Frankfurt City night life.

The iron bridge in Frankfurt is right in the central business district and offers amazing views of the Frankfurt skyline. When exploring the Iron Bridge one could also visit The Frankfurt Main Tower and the Chinese Garden which are both located close by. If one wants to experience Frankfurt theatre world you could also visit The Old Opera House in Frankfurt known as The Alte Oper.
