The Sacre Coeur

The Sacre Coeur, also known as the Sacré Coeur de Montmartre (Sacred Heart of Montmartre), is a church in Paris and is the epitome of the proverbial church on a hill. It is believed to sit on what is thought to be the highest point in Paris.

The Sacre Coeur which is a church, is a catholic church and despite being a big tourist attraction site, the church still holds regular mass schedules to date.

The Sacre Coeur was built in 1875 and offers one of the most scenic views over the city of Paris. The consecration for the catholic church happened in 1914 and completion in 1923. The Sacre Coeur despite being a church is both a religious and political symbol for Paris. Being among one of the oldest churches and also one of the most scenic monuments just like The Eiffel Power and The Arc of Triumph.

The inside of The Sacre Coeur is as beautiful as the outside. Full of hand painted ceilings and paintings and models of the saints.

So how does one get to The Sacre Coeur? There are many ways to get there. One can walk form train station, Charlie du Gare for about 30 minutes. Or one can take a bus that lets one off close to The Sacre Coeur. These modes get you to the bottom of the hill. One can take a car train to the top of the hill or walk up the hill. The car train costs about 2€ per person for one trip upwards. The downhill walk is easy and with every level down the hill one gets amazing views of the city of Paris.

The Sacre Coeur is located in the Montmarte Discrict hence the official name of The Basilica of Sacré Coeur de Montmartre. The Montmarte is an art district and gives one a glimpse into the appreciation of art by French. The district of Montemarte is known for its street artists who draw paintings in real time and also for the amazing art galleries located in the Montmarte district. Here you find amazing art pieces to buy and look at. Another place to find amazing art is at the Louvre Museum where you get to see the Mona Lisa or the Museum of Contemporary art; the Montmarte district really allows you to really see the art, offers an opportunity to purchase and the opportunity to take a leisurely walk while enjoying the scenic french streets. The Montmarte District which is the district where The Sacré Coeur is located also has amazing wall murals of great paintings.

Because street art in Paris is so dynamic and comes in different forms, the street art can change from big murals taking up entire walls to tiny pieces of  art that one really has to pay attention to find/see. Try to see if you discover some amazing street art like the one below.

The district provides the opportunity to look at Paris from an advantaged point of view. The Montmarte will always remain special to me as it is from this district that I got a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower for the first time on my first city to Paris.
