The Arc of Triumph

The Arc of Triumph (Arc de Triomphe) is one of the most remarkable monuments in Paris. The Arc of Triumph which was constructed to honour those who died in French wars. Especially for those who died during the Napoleon wars. Napoleon declared himself emperor of France in the Notre Dame Cathedral in 1804.

The Arc of Triumph provides a great opportunity to have a bird eye’s view of the city of Paris. There is an opportunity to climb to the top of the arc and look upon the city. Other than that you can plan to visit the small museum located at the Arc of Triumph and learn a little of French history. The tomb of the unnamed soldier from World War 1 is located in the vault at the Arc of Triumph.  In addition, the Arc of Triumph is located strategically on the longest avenue in Paris; the Champs Elysee.

Fun Fact

The Arc of Triumph can only be accessed through the underway stairs that are located to either side of it. The Arc of Triumph full name is the ‘Arc de Triomphe de l’Étoile’ which translates toArch of Triumph of the Star.

Napoleons remains passed through the Arc of Triumph as they headed to their final resting place in the Les Invalides. In addition, the remains of Victor Hugo were displayed under the arc during the night of May 22, 1885.

Travel Tip 101

The stairs up the Arc of Triumph are 284 steps, up. 284 steps down. Wear comfortable shoes.

To visit the Arc of Triumph is free but to be able to go up to the top and have a tour it costs 6€.

To make your visit more memorable in the summer; walk along the Avenue of Champs Elysee and through the garden of Tiuleries. This will give you a feel of French Summer as you plan to visit the Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower.

Pick pockets are rampant in Paris, if taking the train or in a crowded place watch your wallet

and your phone.

During summer you can walk through the Champs Elysee and the garden of Tiulires. At the garden of Tiulieres one can eat the famous french Crepes and enjoy a little bit of the outdoors while in Paris. It is about a 30 minute walk to the Arc of Triumph but totally worth it!! Found this cute statue of the standing woman at the garden of Tiuleries.
